Global Brain
Adventures for the mind--a cyberportal to science, art, and history based on Howard Bloom's books The Lucifer Principle and Global Brain. An odyssey through the evolution of culture.
http://howardbloom.net/
The first book to make a strong, solidly backed, and theoretically-original case that we do not live the lonely lives of selfish beings driven by selfish genes, but are parts of a larger whole. An att ractive site containing a great deal of thought-provoking material.
Howard Bloom's Global Brain is filled with scientific firsts. It is the first book to make a strong , solidly backed, and theoretically-original case that we do not live the lonely lives of selfish be ings driven by selfish genes, but are parts of a larger whole. It is the first to take this idea ou t of the realm of mysticism and into the sphere of hard-nosed, data-derived reality. And it is one of the few books which carry off such grand visions with energy, excitement, and keen insight.--Eliz abeth Loftus, past president, American Psychological Society

Evolutionary Psychology: The Ultimate Origins of Human Behavior
Evolutionary Psychology: The Ultimate Origins of Human Behavior
http://www.ulm.edu/~palmer/
Online text by Jack and Linda Palmer on evolutionary aspects of human behavior in contexts such as m ate selection and the development and maintenance of social hierarchies. Topics include human origin s, evolution of the brain and mind, language, tool use and art, and challenges of the modern environ ment.
Evolutionary psychology is the study of the adaptive significance of behavior and attempts to explai n how certain behaviors developed over time in order to secure survival and increase the probability of survival of one's progeny. Darwin's words, penned over a century ago, make the point that each level of cognitive and behavioral complexity is acquired slowly, gradually, through generation upon generation, over eons of time. William James, author of the first psychology textbook, founded his subdiscipline of functionalism on Darwin's basic assertion that behavior, just like morphology, is s haped by selective pressure, and that traits such as consciousness and the ability to plan and to pr oblem solve were highly adaptive traits that developed in the human species as a result of natural s election. What evolutionary psychology offers that is very different from other perspectives is the idea that many of the behaviors that we view as negative or harmful (e.g., jealousy, anger, greed) as well as those we view
