| The Los Angeles Jazz Institute houses and maintains one of the largest jazz archives in the world. A ll styles and eras are represented with a special emphasis on the preservation and documentation of jazz in southern California. Many artists personal collections are being preserved at the Institute including the archives of Howard Rumsey, Bud Shank, Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Art Pepper, Bob C ooper, June Christy, Pete Rugolo, Johnny Richards, Ken Hanna, Dr.Wesley LaViolette, Jimmie Baker, Sl eepy Stein and Ray Avery. The Jazz Institute actively uses the materials in the archive by maintain ing a busy schedule of outreach activities including concerts, festivals, broadcasts, publications a nd the release of important recordings on compact disc. The Institute is housed at California State University Long Beach. The Institute is used by teachers, scholars, students, musicians, independent researchers,the media and the industry. |
